About this tender

Castoldi 15 - what we know.

The JT 15 sits one step up from the smallest 14 in Castoldi's modern range. At 4.58m LOA and 2.08m beam, it is sized for tender garages where the 14 leaves cockpit space underused but the 16 will not fit. Single Yanmar diesel waterjet propulsion, Kevlar laminate hull, and Hypalon tubes are the same engineering recipe as the rest of the production line, which is the reason these boats have held value on the brokerage market.

Power is a Yanmar 110 hp diesel coupled to a Castoldi JET 05 waterjet. Top speed is 33 knots; dry weight is around 820 kg. Seven-passenger Cat C certification gives the boat the same nominal capacity as the JT 14 but in a slightly more comfortable hull. We see this size specified on motoryachts in the 30m to 40m range where the JT 14 is a touch undersized and the JT 16 will not fit the lift envelope.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Mid-step in the small Castoldi range

At 4.58m the JT 15 splits the difference between the 14 and 16. For owners whose garage is fractionally too small for the 16, this is the right answer; for owners where the 14 is fine, save the money and go smaller. The half-metre length difference matters meaningfully for working comfort with a full guest load.

02

Yanmar diesel and Castoldi JET 05

Single Yanmar 110 hp diesel coupled to a Castoldi JET 05 waterjet. Service intervals are standard Yanmar; the JET 05 is the smallest unit in Castoldi's Turbodrive family and matches the engine well. Top speed of 33 knots is competent for the size class.

03

Italian Kevlar hull build

Hand-laid Kevlar and vinylester laminate hull, sandwich-construction deck, factory-built in Castoldi's facility near Milan. Build quality is at the top of the production tender segment, with the consistency that comes from in-house fabrication of hull, waterjet, console and tube on the same site.

04

Compact tender garage compatible

The 4.58m length and 2.08m beam fit inside most small-yacht tender garages where the JT 14 also fits. Weight at around 820 kg dry plus engine is similar to the 14. For owners on a 30m to 40m yacht doing the garage feasibility check, treat the 15 as the natural step up if the dimensional envelope allows.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

JT 14 or JT 15?
Both carry seven passengers and run on similar drivelines. The 15 is half a metre longer and 80mm beamier, which matters for working comfort. If the garage envelope allows the 15 it is the better choice; if the envelope is the binding constraint the 14 fits in tighter spaces. We tend to default to the 15 unless the garage rules it out.
How does it compare to a similar-sized RIB with outboard?
Outboard RIBs at 4.5m typically deliver more headline speed for less money, but expose the prop to beach damage and require petrol fuel on the mothership. The Castoldi 15's diesel waterjet trades top speed for safety, beach capability and reduced fire risk. For most superyacht owners the trade is worth making.
What is the realistic working range?
Castoldi do not publish a specific tank size for the 15, but expect a working day range adequate for shore runs up to 2 to 3 hours away from the mothership. The diesel waterjet is meaningfully more economical than a comparable outboard at cruise speeds, which extends practical operating time.
Is it strictly a tender, or can it operate independently?
It is built for tender duty, with the size and certification to suit. As an independent day boat it works for short coastal hops with a small crew and load, but the absence of overnight provision and weather protection limits stand-alone use. For owners who want a tender that doubles as an independent day boat, look at the JT 17 or 19.

Castoldi

Albairate, Italy

Castoldi is an Italian manufacturer headquartered in Albairate, in the Milan metropolitan area of Lombardy. The company has been developing waterjet propulsion since the early 1960s, with the first mass-produced Castoldi waterjet unit presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 1969. Today more than 40,000 Castoldi hydrojet units operate worldwide, across civilian, military, and commercial fleets.

The range we ask Castoldi for runs from compact garage-fit tenders at 4.3m right through to the flagship Jet Tender 34 at 10.5m - sixteen passengers, twin 440 hp diesels paired to twin Turbodrive waterjet units, and a certified top speed of 50 knots. Every model in between follows the same build logic: deep-V hulls hand-laid in Kevlar and vinylester resin, Castoldi's own Turbodrive waterjet drives manufactured in-house, and a package of practical details - retractable helms, self-bailing cockpits, and walkthrough deck layouts - that captains value on a working programme.

The propeller-free drivetrain is the defining feature of any Castoldi. No exposed rotating parts below the keel means safe operation around swimmers and watersport guests; zero draft restriction means beach landings and sand-bank crossings that a conventional-drive tender cannot attempt. SOLAS-certified rescue versions (JT 14 RB, JT 18 RB, JT 19 RB) sit alongside the standard tender line, so owners running a dual-purpose programme can specify a single platform. We'd put the mid-range JT 21 through JT 28 models alongside the main European jet-tender alternatives: the build quality is consistent, the proprietary waterjet technology is genuinely in-house, and the range breadth covers most mothership garage sizes without compromise.
