About this tender

Castoldi 16 - what we know.

The JT 16 is the Castoldi we recommend most often for owners with motoryachts in the 35m to 45m bracket. At 5.08m LOA and 2.08m beam, the boat sits comfortably in standard mid-size tender garages, carries eight guests at coastal certification, and runs cleanly with a single Yanmar 4JH110 marine diesel coupled to a Castoldi waterjet. The combination of size, capacity and driveline reliability is the reason this is one of the best-selling models in Castoldi's range.

The hard-chine deep-V monohedric hull is purpose-developed for waterjet propulsion, with 22-degree deadrise at transom and integrated spray rails. 0.38m diameter Hypalon tubes give a sensible balance of buoyancy and stowed footprint. Top speed sits comfortably in the low 30 knots, which is the right operating envelope for a guest tender that prioritises ride quality over outright performance.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Yanmar 4JH110 diesel waterjet

Single Yanmar 4JH110 marine diesel at 110 mhp at 3,200 rpm coupled to a Castoldi waterjet. Yanmar's parts and service network is global; the JH110 is one of the most widely-fitted small marine diesels and spares are straightforward to source. Service intervals are predictable, which matters for crew planning.

02

Hull purpose-developed for waterjet

The 22-degree deadrise hard-chine deep-V hull is designed specifically for waterjet propulsion rather than adapted from a propeller-drive shape. Spray rails and tube geometry give a dry ride at coastal cruise speeds and predictable handling at low-speed manoeuvring on the waterjet.

03

Standard mid-size garage fit

At 5.08m LOA and 2.08m beam, the JT 16 fits inside the tender envelope on most 35m to 45m motoryachts that have been built to carry an eight-passenger guest tender. The footprint matches the most common production tender lift sizes, which is the reason this is a high-volume seller in the Castoldi line.

04

Eight-guest practical capacity

Eight-passenger Cat C certification is the operational headline, and unlike the smaller models in the range the deck genuinely supports the count for working shore runs. For larger guest groups, look at the JT 18 or 19; for smaller yachts where the JT 16 is too big, look at the JT 14 or 15.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

Why is the JT 16 a Castoldi best-seller?
Size, capacity and driveline reliability all line up for the most common guest-tender garage envelope on a 35m to 45m motoryacht. The eight-passenger figure matches typical day-boat group sizes; the 5.08m by 2.08m footprint matches standard tender lift dimensions; and the Yanmar plus Castoldi waterjet combination is the reliability benchmark in the segment.
JT 16 or JT 17?
The 17 has a more powerful 170 hp diesel and a slightly different gull-wing hull, with marginally higher top speed. The 16 is the more economical and lighter package. For owners doing primarily shore-run tender duty, the 16 is the right call; for owners who want a faster boat with more reserve power for mixed conditions, the 17 is worth the upgrade.
What is the practical operating range?
Castoldi specifications do not call out a specific fuel tank for the 16, but the diesel waterjet is meaningfully more economical than equivalent petrol outboards. Expect a working operating window adequate for half-day shore runs without refuelling. The mothership's bunkering supports any longer programme.
Will it work for beach landings?
Yes, that is one of the operational headlines for waterjet propulsion. No exposed propeller, controlled approach in shallow water, and the Clear-Duct unclogging system handles weed and debris. For programmes involving regular beach use or shallow-water anchorages, the JT 16 is the right answer over a comparable outboard RIB.

Castoldi

Albairate, Italy

Castoldi is an Italian manufacturer headquartered in Albairate, in the Milan metropolitan area of Lombardy. The company has been developing waterjet propulsion since the early 1960s, with the first mass-produced Castoldi waterjet unit presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 1969. Today more than 40,000 Castoldi hydrojet units operate worldwide, across civilian, military, and commercial fleets.

The range we ask Castoldi for runs from compact garage-fit tenders at 4.3m right through to the flagship Jet Tender 34 at 10.5m - sixteen passengers, twin 440 hp diesels paired to twin Turbodrive waterjet units, and a certified top speed of 50 knots. Every model in between follows the same build logic: deep-V hulls hand-laid in Kevlar and vinylester resin, Castoldi's own Turbodrive waterjet drives manufactured in-house, and a package of practical details - retractable helms, self-bailing cockpits, and walkthrough deck layouts - that captains value on a working programme.

The propeller-free drivetrain is the defining feature of any Castoldi. No exposed rotating parts below the keel means safe operation around swimmers and watersport guests; zero draft restriction means beach landings and sand-bank crossings that a conventional-drive tender cannot attempt. SOLAS-certified rescue versions (JT 14 RB, JT 18 RB, JT 19 RB) sit alongside the standard tender line, so owners running a dual-purpose programme can specify a single platform. We'd put the mid-range JT 21 through JT 28 models alongside the main European jet-tender alternatives: the build quality is consistent, the proprietary waterjet technology is genuinely in-house, and the range breadth covers most mothership garage sizes without compromise.
