About this tender

Castoldi 17 - what we know.

The JT 17 is the size in Castoldi's range that we put forward when an owner wants a tender with a clear performance margin over the 16 without stepping into the bigger 18 or 19 footprint. At 5.36m LOA and 2.26m beam, it is sized for tender garages on motoryachts in the 40m to 50m range, with the gull-wing hull profile that distinguishes it from the smaller deep-V monohedric models in the line.

Power is a 170 hp diesel coupled to a Castoldi waterjet, giving 34 knots top speed when light and 32.5 knots fully loaded. The extra horsepower over the JT 16's 110 hp Yanmar makes a real difference in mixed conditions and with a full guest load, which is why we tend to recommend the upgrade when the garage envelope allows. Nine-passenger Cat C certification covers most working tender groups.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Gull-wing hull form

The JT 17 uses a hard-chine gull-wing hull rather than the deep-V monohedric form on the smaller models in the range. The gull-wing geometry adds dynamic stability at low speed and gives a slightly drier ride in chop. The 0.43m diameter inflatable tube is also larger than the 16, contributing to the additional working freeboard.

02

170 hp diesel power upgrade

The 170 hp diesel waterjet driveline gives meaningful performance over the JT 16's 110 hp setup, both in pickup with a full load and in top speed reserve. 34 knots light, 32.5 knots fully loaded; the difference between the two figures is small, which speaks to the hull and driveline being well-matched to the design weight.

03

40m to 50m yacht garage fit

At 5.36m LOA and 2.26m beam, the JT 17 fits the standard tender envelope on most 40m to 50m motoryachts. For owners moving up from a smaller tender on a previous yacht, this is often the right step-up size. Confirm against the lift specification before committing on a specific hull.

04

Italian build, global support

Same Italian factory build standard as the rest of the Castoldi range, with Yanmar diesel parts and service available globally. For owners on multi-year cruising programmes the support network is the deciding factor over comparable smaller-yard alternatives.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

JT 17 over JT 16?
Yes if the garage allows the larger boat. The 170 hp diesel gives a meaningful performance margin over the 16's 110 hp at full load, and the gull-wing hull rides slightly drier in chop. For owners who need to step up the working capacity from eight to nine passengers, the 17 is the right answer.
How does it compare to the JT 18?
The 18 is 32cm longer and 18cm wider, with a Volvo Penta D3-170 diesel and slightly higher passenger count. For owners who can fit the 18 the extra deck space is worth specifying; for owners where the garage envelope allows the 17 but not the 18, the 17 is the practical answer with similar driveline performance.
Is the gull-wing hull noticeable in use?
Yes, particularly at low and intermediate speeds. The gull-wing geometry adds stability at rest and during slow-speed manoeuvring, which matters for guest boarding and beach approaches. At cruise speed the difference versus a deep-V is more subtle and concerns chop response rather than peak performance.
Will it work as a chase boat as well as a tender?
It is built for tender duty rather than chase work. 34 knots top speed is fine for following a 30 knot mothership, but the boat is sized and certified for shore-run guest tender use rather than long-leg chase support. For dedicated chase work look at the JT 28, JT 34, or a different platform entirely.

Castoldi

Albairate, Italy

Castoldi is an Italian manufacturer headquartered in Albairate, in the Milan metropolitan area of Lombardy. The company has been developing waterjet propulsion since the early 1960s, with the first mass-produced Castoldi waterjet unit presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 1969. Today more than 40,000 Castoldi hydrojet units operate worldwide, across civilian, military, and commercial fleets.

The range we ask Castoldi for runs from compact garage-fit tenders at 4.3m right through to the flagship Jet Tender 34 at 10.5m - sixteen passengers, twin 440 hp diesels paired to twin Turbodrive waterjet units, and a certified top speed of 50 knots. Every model in between follows the same build logic: deep-V hulls hand-laid in Kevlar and vinylester resin, Castoldi's own Turbodrive waterjet drives manufactured in-house, and a package of practical details - retractable helms, self-bailing cockpits, and walkthrough deck layouts - that captains value on a working programme.

The propeller-free drivetrain is the defining feature of any Castoldi. No exposed rotating parts below the keel means safe operation around swimmers and watersport guests; zero draft restriction means beach landings and sand-bank crossings that a conventional-drive tender cannot attempt. SOLAS-certified rescue versions (JT 14 RB, JT 18 RB, JT 19 RB) sit alongside the standard tender line, so owners running a dual-purpose programme can specify a single platform. We'd put the mid-range JT 21 through JT 28 models alongside the main European jet-tender alternatives: the build quality is consistent, the proprietary waterjet technology is genuinely in-house, and the range breadth covers most mothership garage sizes without compromise.
