About this tender

Castoldi 18 - what we know.

The JT 18 is one of the higher-volume Castoldi sizes for owners on motoryachts in the 40m to 55m range. At 5.68m LOA and 2.44m beam, it is sized for the standard mid-to-large tender garage envelope and certified for nine guests under Cat C. Single Volvo Penta D3-170 diesel coupled to a Castoldi waterjet is the standard setup; this is one of two models in the range that uses the Volvo D3 over the Yanmar JH-series.

112 litre fuel tank, hard-chine deep-V monohedric hull with 20-degree deadrise, and 0.45m Hypalon tubes (5 separate compartments) make up the working specification. The boat is built to the same Italian factory standard as the rest of the line, with consistent finish and parts integration. We see the JT 18 specified more than any other size in the upper-mid range, alongside the JT 19.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Volvo Penta D3-170 diesel

The 170 mhp Volvo D3 at 4,000 rpm is the reason this boat behaves differently from the Yanmar-powered models in the smaller end of the range. Volvo's parts and service network is global, and the D3 is one of the most widely-fitted small marine diesels. Service intervals and life expectancy are well-documented.

02

Standard mid-large garage fit

5.68m LOA and 2.44m beam matches the standard tender envelope on most 40m to 55m motoryachts. For owners stepping up the tender size on a refit or new build, this is often the right answer. Worth confirming weight and rigging point geometry against the mothership's lift specification.

03

Nine-guest practical capacity

Nine-passenger Cat C certification, supported by a deck layout that genuinely works for the count. For larger guest groups the JT 19 adds one to ten, or the JT 21 carries twelve; for smaller groups the JT 16 or 17 is more economical. The 18 is the right size for most working tender programmes.

04

Italian build, fire-retardant laminate

Hand-laid Kevlar and vinylester fire-retardant resin hull, sandwich-construction deck and console, fire-retardant resin throughout. Built in Castoldi's factory near Milan. The build standard and fire-retardant specification are part of why these boats are accepted by yacht insurers and class societies without issue.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

Yanmar or Volvo Penta on the Castoldi range?
Castoldi specifies different engines on different hulls based on size and power requirement. The JT 18 and JT 19 use the Volvo Penta D3-170 series; smaller hulls use Yanmar 4JH-series; bigger hulls use larger Yanmar 4LV or 6LY engines. Both are credible marine diesel choices with strong global support; the model choice is what dictates the engine.
JT 18 or JT 19?
Same beam at 2.44m and similar driveline; the 19 is 30cm longer, certified for ten passengers, and has the optional 220 hp engine upgrade. For owners whose programme needs a tenth seat or who want the upgraded engine, go to the 19. For owners where nine guests is enough and the smaller footprint helps with garage geometry, stay at the 18.
What is the practical fuel range?
112 litres of diesel at the JT 18's economical waterjet cruise speed gives a working range adequate for half-day shore runs. For longer days, the mothership's bunkering covers the gap. The waterjet driveline uses fuel meaningfully more efficiently than equivalent petrol outboards, which extends the practical operating window.
Is there a SOLAS variant of the 18?
Yes, the JT 18 RB is the SOLAS-certified rescue boat version of the 18, with the same hull dimensions and the addition of the RI.SE.R. self-righting system. For yachts above 500 GT operating under LY3 rules, the 18 RB is the practical compliance answer.

Castoldi

Albairate, Italy

Castoldi is an Italian manufacturer headquartered in Albairate, in the Milan metropolitan area of Lombardy. The company has been developing waterjet propulsion since the early 1960s, with the first mass-produced Castoldi waterjet unit presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 1969. Today more than 40,000 Castoldi hydrojet units operate worldwide, across civilian, military, and commercial fleets.

The range we ask Castoldi for runs from compact garage-fit tenders at 4.3m right through to the flagship Jet Tender 34 at 10.5m - sixteen passengers, twin 440 hp diesels paired to twin Turbodrive waterjet units, and a certified top speed of 50 knots. Every model in between follows the same build logic: deep-V hulls hand-laid in Kevlar and vinylester resin, Castoldi's own Turbodrive waterjet drives manufactured in-house, and a package of practical details - retractable helms, self-bailing cockpits, and walkthrough deck layouts - that captains value on a working programme.

The propeller-free drivetrain is the defining feature of any Castoldi. No exposed rotating parts below the keel means safe operation around swimmers and watersport guests; zero draft restriction means beach landings and sand-bank crossings that a conventional-drive tender cannot attempt. SOLAS-certified rescue versions (JT 14 RB, JT 18 RB, JT 19 RB) sit alongside the standard tender line, so owners running a dual-purpose programme can specify a single platform. We'd put the mid-range JT 21 through JT 28 models alongside the main European jet-tender alternatives: the build quality is consistent, the proprietary waterjet technology is genuinely in-house, and the range breadth covers most mothership garage sizes without compromise.
