About this tender

Castoldi 21 - what we know.

The JT 21 is the size in Castoldi's range that opens up the upper end of the practical guest tender envelope. At 6.30m LOA and 2.60m beam, it carries twelve guests at coastal certification, runs to 34 knots top speed on a Yanmar 250 hp diesel coupled to a Castoldi Turbodrive 240 H.C.T. waterjet, and fits the standard tender garage envelope on motoryachts in the 60m bracket. This is the step where the Castoldi range moves from sub-six-metre tenders into proper big-yacht tender territory.

The Yanmar 4LV250 is a 250 mhp engine running at 3,800 rpm; combined with the larger Turbodrive 240 H.C.T. waterjet, the boat has meaningfully more performance reserve under load than the smaller 18 or 19. 155 litre fuel tank gives a working operating window for full-day shore-run programmes. Build standard is identical to the rest of the range: Kevlar and vinylester laminate, Italian factory construction, Hypalon Neoprene tubes.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Yanmar 4LV250 and Turbodrive 240

The Yanmar 4LV at 250 mhp / 186 kW drives a Castoldi Turbodrive 240 H.C.T. waterjet. The larger drive is sized for the boat's weight and performance demands, with hydraulic clutch, movable grid for reverse and Clear-Duct unclogging. Top speed of 34 knots is competent for the size class with twelve guests aboard.

02

Twelve-passenger guest tender

Cat C certification supports twelve passengers, and the deck layout genuinely works for the count. This is the size step where the Castoldi range starts to compete with stand-alone day boats for working capacity. For yachts hosting larger guest groups regularly, this is often the right answer over running two smaller tenders.

03

60m yacht garage fit

6.30m LOA and 2.60m beam matches the standard tender envelope on most motoryachts in the 55m to 70m bracket. Slightly longer and beamier than the 19, with proportionally more usable deck space. Confirm rigging point geometry against the mothership's lift specification before committing on a specific hull.

04

Italian build, global parts

Same factory build standard as the rest of the Castoldi range. Yanmar parts and service available globally; the 4LV250 is widely fitted on commercial and leisure boats. Service intervals are predictable and crew-friendly, which matters on yachts running multi-year cruising programmes.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

JT 21 or JT 25?
The 25 is meaningfully larger at 7.5m LOA and 2.6m beam with a Yanmar 4LV250 driving a bigger Turbodrive 284 waterjet, certified for sixteen passengers. For yachts hosting larger guest groups or for owners who want the bigger boat presence, the 25 is the right answer; for yachts in the 55m to 65m range where the 21 fits the lift envelope, the 21 is the practical choice.
Why specify the bigger Turbodrive 240 over the smaller waterjets?
The Turbodrive 240 H.C.T. is sized for the 250 hp engine and the boat's working weight. Smaller waterjets on the 18 and 19 are appropriately sized for those hulls; on the 21 they would be a power mismatch. The Turbodrive 240 gives the right combination of thrust at slow speed and efficiency at cruise.
What is the realistic working range?
On 155 litres of diesel at the Castoldi waterjet's economical cruise speed, expect a working day range adequate for full-day shore programmes. Diesel waterjet drivelines are meaningfully more economical than equivalent petrol outboards, which extends the operating window without bunkering.
Is the JT 21 used as a SOLAS rescue boat?
Castoldi's SOLAS rescue range covers the 14, 18 and 19 RB sizes; the 21 is offered in standard tender configuration only. For SOLAS compliance use the JT 19 RB; for a primary guest tender alongside a separate rescue boat, the JT 21 is a credible specification choice.

Castoldi

Albairate, Italy

Castoldi is an Italian manufacturer headquartered in Albairate, in the Milan metropolitan area of Lombardy. The company has been developing waterjet propulsion since the early 1960s, with the first mass-produced Castoldi waterjet unit presented at the Genoa Boat Show in 1969. Today more than 40,000 Castoldi hydrojet units operate worldwide, across civilian, military, and commercial fleets.

The range we ask Castoldi for runs from compact garage-fit tenders at 4.3m right through to the flagship Jet Tender 34 at 10.5m - sixteen passengers, twin 440 hp diesels paired to twin Turbodrive waterjet units, and a certified top speed of 50 knots. Every model in between follows the same build logic: deep-V hulls hand-laid in Kevlar and vinylester resin, Castoldi's own Turbodrive waterjet drives manufactured in-house, and a package of practical details - retractable helms, self-bailing cockpits, and walkthrough deck layouts - that captains value on a working programme.

The propeller-free drivetrain is the defining feature of any Castoldi. No exposed rotating parts below the keel means safe operation around swimmers and watersport guests; zero draft restriction means beach landings and sand-bank crossings that a conventional-drive tender cannot attempt. SOLAS-certified rescue versions (JT 14 RB, JT 18 RB, JT 19 RB) sit alongside the standard tender line, so owners running a dual-purpose programme can specify a single platform. We'd put the mid-range JT 21 through JT 28 models alongside the main European jet-tender alternatives: the build quality is consistent, the proprietary waterjet technology is genuinely in-house, and the range breadth covers most mothership garage sizes without compromise.
