About this tender

Cobra 8m - what we know.

The Cobra 8m is the build we ask Cobra RIBs for when a yacht programme needs a proper inboard-engined tender at the compact end of the range. It is the entry point to Cobra's Nautique Inboard line - a platform that carries the same deep-V hull geometry, suspension helm seating, and handbuilt GRP finish found on the larger 9m and 10m models, but in a hull that fits a tighter garage envelope. Ten passengers, a diesel sterndrive driveline, and 240 litres of fuel capacity: the numbers are modest only in the context of its length.

Cobra has been designing and building RIBs from its Christchurch, Dorset factory since 1988, and five generations of hull development are visible in the 8m. The Generation V deep-V hull increases deadrise while reducing energy loss and improving efficiency; the tube position is engineered to maximise spray deflection. Every boat leaves the factory after a full quality-control check, hand-finished by the same team that produces the larger Inboard models. That continuity of build standard is why we see the same fit and finish quality here that a captain would expect on a 10m GRP tender.

The 8m Inboard is offered with a configurable layout and a choice of diesel engine and sterndrive combinations, with left-hand or right-hand helm position available to suit your programme. The engine room lid serves double duty as a sunbed area aft - a practical detail that returns deck space to the crew when the boat is at anchor. Upholstery, tube colour, and decking are all specified to order, so the finished boat integrates cleanly with the yacht's livery.

We would put the Cobra 8m alongside other British-built inboard RIBs in the 8m class and note that Cobra's price point remains competitive without any production being sourced overseas. For owners who want the proven Cobra Inboard DNA in a hull short enough to sit comfortably in a mid-sized superyacht garage, this is the model to specify.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Generation V Deep-V GRP Hull

Cobra's fifth-generation deep-V hull design increases deadrise while reducing energy loss, with tube position optimised for spray deflection. The hull is moulded on a 5-axis CNC machine to a tolerance of 0.005, then hand-finished at the Christchurch factory. The result is a GRP structure that punches above its length class in rough water.

02

Diesel Inboard Sterndrive Driveline

The 8m runs a diesel inboard engine paired with sterndrive propulsion - the same configuration used across the Cobra Nautique Inboard range. Diesel suits a superyacht programme where fuel compatibility with the mothership and low-speed torque for ferry work both matter. Engine choice is confirmed with Cobra at order stage.

03

Suspension Helm Seating as Standard

Cobra's proprietary suspension helm seats are fitted as standard across the entire Nautique Inboard range. All suspension mechanisms are integrated and concealed within the seat back, protecting them from salt air and keeping the helm area clean. A sit-stand bolster option is available, which is the preferred configuration for offshore passages.

04

240-Litre Diesel Fuel Capacity

A 240-litre fuel tank is confirmed for the 8m, a meaningful number for a hull of this length and one that supports extended day-runs without a return to the mothership for fuel. Combined with the efficiency gains from the Generation V hull, range is genuinely usable rather than nominal.

05

Fully Configurable, Handbuilt in the UK

Every Cobra 8m is custom-built to order in Christchurch, UK. Layout, helm position, tube colour, upholstery, and decking are all specified by the owner or captain. No production is sourced overseas. For a superyacht tender programme, that means lead-time discipline and a single point of contact for snagging and warranty.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

What engine options are available for the Cobra 8m Inboard?
Cobra specifies diesel inboard engines paired with sterndrive propulsion on the 8m. The precise engine list is confirmed at order stage and varies by programme requirements. The adjacent 8.5m Nautique Inboard is offered with options including MerCruiser, Yanmar, and Volvo Penta sterndrive units, and the 8m is configured from a comparable menu. Contact Cobra or your broker for the current engine matrix.
Will the Cobra 8m fit in a standard superyacht garage?
At 8.0m overall length and 2.55m beam, the 8m Inboard is the most compact model in the Cobra Nautique Inboard range. Whether it fits a specific garage depends on the yacht's tender bay dimensions and lifting gear. We recommend confirming draft and air-draft figures with Cobra directly, and reviewing the garage envelope with your naval architect before order.
How does the Cobra 8m compare to the Patronus tender range?
The Nautique Inboard 8m and the Patronus are distinct Cobra product lines. The Patronus is designed specifically as a superyacht tender, with a bespoke-order build and a focus on guest transfer and water-sports versatility. The 8m Inboard shares the Nautique hull DNA and inboard diesel driveline but is positioned as a more accessible entry into the Inboard range. Both are built in Christchurch to the same quality standard.
Is the Cobra 8m Inboard built in the UK?
Yes. Every Cobra RIB, including the 8m Inboard, is designed and handbuilt at Cobra's factory in Christchurch, Dorset, UK. No production is outsourced overseas. Each hull is moulded on a 5-axis CNC machine and hand-finished before a full quality-control check prior to release.
What is the fuel capacity of the Cobra 8m, and is diesel the only option?
The Cobra 8m Inboard carries 240 litres of diesel fuel. The Nautique Inboard range runs diesel inboard engines as standard; there is no petrol-inboard option in this line. For a superyacht tender that bunkered from the mothership's diesel supply, this simplifies logistics considerably.
Can the layout and colours be customised on the Cobra 8m?
Yes. Cobra builds every 8m to order. Tube colour, upholstery material and colour, decking type, and helm position (left or right hand) are all specified by the buyer. Layout configurations vary; Cobra's team will work through the options with the captain or project manager during the order process.

The yard

Cobra

Christchurch, UK

Cobra RIBs is an independent, family-run British manufacturer based in Christchurch, Dorset, building custom RIBs and superyacht tenders entirely in-house since 1988. The yard built its name on the leisure side of the market first, developing five generations of the deep-V hulled Nautique range - a platform that earned a strong reputation for seakeeping and build consistency on the UK south coast. That hull engineering discipline carries directly into the tender programme.

For superyacht work, the build we ask Cobra for sits across two ranges. The Patronus is the garage-friendly tender line, running from 5.6m to 7.2m with Yanmar 4LV diesel inboard power; it covers SOLAS rescue craft, beach lander, and guest transfer duties in a single bespoke package. The Navis is the chase end of the catalogue, with an 11.85m hull in production and the stated intention to bring a larger platform to market. Every boat is hand-finished in Cobra's own GRP unit, tubing workshop, and assembly facility at Priory Industrial Park - one yard, one build team, no outsourced lamination.

Cobra entered the superyacht tender segment formally in 2017 and has grown quickly enough to expand its Christchurch facility twice since. We'd put it alongside the smaller British specialist yards for owners and captains who want a fully bespoke, fully UK-built product at a price point that reflects a direct factory relationship rather than a distributor margin.
