About this tender

Compass - what we know.

The Compass Tenders 9.7m is the build we ask Compass for when an owner wants a fully-bespoke open tender at the upper end of what a single-engine leg-driven platform can deliver. Twelve guests, diesel inboard with sterndrive leg, CE Cat C, and an engineering specification that goes well past series-build standards. Hull and deck are E-glass with carbon reinforcements in load areas, laid up over Corecell foam in epoxy, vacuum-bagged consolidated and post-cured.

Compass deliver bespoke tenders for discerning superyacht owners across more than sixty-five completed and in-build hulls. The 9.7m platform is one of their reference open tender geometries for the upper-end programme, with full latitude on layout, joinery, electronics and exterior styling against the mothership brief. This is not a series build with options, it is a custom build with a known performance envelope. We treat the 9.7m as the right answer when the owner wants a Compass-grade open tender at twelve-guest capacity.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

E-glass and carbon, vacuum-bagged epoxy

Hull and deck laminate is E-glass with selective carbon fibre reinforcements over Corecell foam core, all in epoxy resin. Vacuum-bagged consolidation and full post-cure. High-density inserts at cleats, lifting points and through-deck fittings. That is the engineering spec captains care about, not the brochure language.

02

Twelve-guest CE Cat C plate

Twelve guests rated for coastal use under CE Category C. Internal bulkheads form watertight compartments to the build specification. Interior mouldings and seat units are composite construction, integrated with the deck rather than dropped in as furniture.

03

Diesel leg-driven platform

Diesel inboard with a sterndrive leg, the configuration Compass typically specify on the 9-10m open tenders. Diesel runs off the yacht's existing fuel bunker, the leg gives a clean transom for swim-platform work and predictable cruise efficiency. 350-litre fuel tank for working day range.

04

Bespoke fit-out to mothership brief

Every Compass tender is drawn around its specific mothership. Exterior styling, interior trim, deck arrangement and lift integration are all shaped to the yacht. That is what owners go to Compass for, and it is what justifies the price premium over a series Castoldi or Pascoe.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

Compass 9.7m versus Castoldi JT32 at similar size?
Different propulsion philosophies. Castoldi at 9-10m is a diesel waterjet platform built in series. Compass 9.7m is a diesel sterndrive built bespoke around a specific yacht. Castoldi gives you predictable cost and lead time, Compass gives you full design integration with the mothership and a higher-spec laminate. Choose based on whether the budget supports bespoke or whether series-build is the right answer.
Why E-glass with carbon rather than full carbon?
Selective carbon reinforcement at load areas gives most of the weight saving of a full carbon laminate at significantly lower cost and with simpler repair pathways. E-glass elsewhere keeps the hull recoverable from impact damage that would write off a full-carbon panel. It is the sensible engineering choice for a tender that will actually be used hard, rather than a show piece.
How is the 9.7m delivered into a build programme?
Compass run the design and build process in parallel with the mothership. Brief comes from the build captain and the owner's representative, naval architecture and exterior design are Compass in-house, lift integration and garage drawing are coordinated with the main yard. Lead time is consistent with bespoke tender practice, talk to us early on a new build to lock the slot.

The yard

Compass

Hamble, UK

Compass Tenders is the build we turn to when an owner's programme demands a fully custom tender matched to the mothership, not a semi-production hull dressed up in matching paint. Founded in 2004 by Richard Faulkner on the River Hamble, Hampshire, the yard has grown from a small repair shop into a facility exceeding 35,000 sq ft with more than 100 skilled professionals on the floor.

The range runs from open sport tenders and centre consoles through to enclosed limousines and utility workboats, covering roughly 5.0m to 14.0m. Compass also offers the Latitude semi-custom limousine platform - four coachroof profiles (North, East, South, West) from 10.0m to 12.0m - for programmes that need a shorter lead time without abandoning the bespoke brief. More than 70 hulls have been delivered to date, including four tenders for Lürssen's 123.0m Al Lusail, paired limousines for the 160.0m Blue, and the award-winning Shadow Kitten catamaran built to accompany Nebula.

What marks Compass out is the consistent design continuity with the mothership: the in-house team works directly with the superyacht's own styling office, and all composite, electrical, glazing, and mechanical work is completed on site. We'd put their finish quality alongside the best British yards at a build cost that reflects the River Hamble location rather than a Mediterranean one. Multiple Boat International Design and Innovation Award wins confirm the reputation is not self-reported.
