About this tender

MasterCraft NXT20 - what we know.

The MasterCraft NXT20 is the build we point first-time towboat buyers toward when the brief is straightforward: a garage-friendly 6.10m hull that skis, wakeboards, and surfs without demanding a six-figure commitment. It is a single-purpose freshwater platform - V-drive inboard, eleven-person cockpit, and a standard features list that covers more ground than the price suggests. MasterCraft substantially reworked the NXT line for 2020, fitting the Ilmor Marine 6.0L MPI as the base engine and rolling the Gen 2 Surf System into the options catalogue for the first time. The result is a boat that punches credibly against mid-range towboats from larger programmes.

We'd put the NXT20 alongside the entry and mid points of the Malibu and Nautique catalogues and note that MasterCraft has kept the construction standard consistent with its higher-priced hulls. The hull layup is solid fibreglass, stringers are premanufactured foam, and the running surface carries the same asymmetric chine geometry - five degrees more angle to starboard - that MasterCraft uses across the X Series to produce a symmetrical wake despite inboard prop torque and helm weight. That is not a cost-cut; it is the same engineering logic applied to a lower price point.

The 2020 specification brings 380 hp from the Ilmor 6.0L MPI, an upgrade of 60 hp over the outgoing base engine. The V-drive layout positions the engine aft, keeping the cockpit floor low and the bow entry clean for skiing. Four factory speed profiles come loaded into the 4.3-inch display - surf left, surf right, wake, and ski - and the optional Gen 2 Surf System adds port-and-starboard wake-shaping tabs under the swim platform that can produce over 1,600 distinct wave shapes in combination with ballast and boat speed.

At 6.10m on the waterline and 1,792 kg dry, the NXT20 stays within the tow ratings of most full-size SUVs and fits a standard single garage without modification. The 178-litre fuel tank is workable for a full day on the lake. Where the boat draws a line is in choppy open water or coastal use: this is a sheltered-water ski and surf hull, CE-C rated, and your programme should reflect that. Within those parameters, we have seen few comparable packages at this price.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Ilmor 6.0L MPI Inboard

The 2020 model year upgrade brought the Ilmor Marine 6.0L MPI engine to the NXT20, delivering 380 hp - 60 hp more than the outgoing base unit. A single-inboard V-drive layout keeps torque centred and the cockpit floor low, which is the configuration serious towboat riders expect.

02

Gen 2 Surf System

MasterCraft's Gen 2 Surf System, available on the NXT20 from 2020, uses port-and-starboard wake-shaping tabs under the swim platform that extend to any intermediate position. Combined with ballast and boat speed, the system can produce over 1,600 distinct wave configurations for surf and wakeboard riders of varying weights and styles.

03

Eleven-Person Cockpit in 6.10m

Rated for eleven people, the NXT20 cockpit makes practical use of its 2.31m beam. Hinged-seat storage runs the length of the cabin, the observer seat to port lifts to a large storage bay, and MasterCraft fits a built-in cooler below the starboard bench as standard. Interior width is 2.07m.

04

Garage-Friendly Dimensions

At 6.10m overall and 1,792 kg dry, the NXT20 fits within the tow ratings of most full-size SUVs and sits comfortably in a standard single garage. The beam of 2.31m keeps road transport straightforward without permits or escorts.

05

Vector Drive Hull with Wake-Priority Bottom

MasterCraft's Vector Drive hull applies an asymmetric running surface - five degrees more deadrise on the starboard chine - to cancel inboard prop torque and produce a symmetrical wake despite offset helm and engine weight. Modified-vee sections amidships soften chop; narrow lifting strakes run forward and taper off to let the hull run deeper at boarding speed.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

What engine does the 2020 MasterCraft NXT20 come with?
The 2020 NXT20 comes standard with the Ilmor Marine 6.0L MPI petrol inboard, producing 380 hp. MasterCraft upgraded the NXT base engine for the 2020 model year, adding 60 hp over the previous unit. The engine is positioned aft in a V-drive configuration to keep the cockpit floor low and the wake geometry clean.
Can the NXT20 be used for wakesurfing?
Yes, with the optional Gen 2 Surf System fitted. The system uses port-and-starboard wake-shaping tabs mounted under the swim platform, adjustable to any intermediate position. Combined with the onboard ballast and GPS speed control, it produces surf and wakesurf waves on either side. The inboard V-drive layout is the correct configuration for surfing, unlike the outboard Global Edition variant.
Is the MasterCraft NXT20 easy to tow and store?
At 6.10m overall and 1,792 kg dry, the NXT20 sits within the tow ratings of most full-size SUVs and fits a standard single garage. The 2.31m beam keeps it road-legal without specialist transport permits in most markets. These dimensions are a deliberate design choice and a primary selling point of the NXT line.
What is the passenger capacity of the NXT20?
The NXT20 is rated for eleven persons. MasterCraft achieves this in a 6.10m hull through a layout that includes a midship bench, aft observer seat with underfloor storage, and hinged-seat storage runs fore and aft. A built-in cooler is fitted below the starboard bench.
What is the difference between the NXT20 and the NXT20 Global Edition?
The standard NXT20 uses an Ilmor inboard V-drive engine and supports wakesurfing via the Gen 2 Surf System. The Global Edition is a separate, export-focused variant with a bracket-mounted Mercury Verado outboard, a beam of 2.31m sized to fit a shipping container, and no surf capability due to the outboard configuration. Specs, price, and intended use differ substantially between the two.
What certification does the MasterCraft NXT20 carry?
The NXT20 carries CE Class C certification, which covers coastal waters and large bays in sea states up to Beaufort 4. It is a sheltered-water ski and surf hull, not a coastal or offshore platform. Buyers intending saltwater use should specify the optional saltwater package, which adds corrosion resistance, hydraulic steering, and closed-loop engine cooling.

MasterCraft

Vonore, Tennessee, USA

MasterCraft is an American performance boat manufacturer founded in 1968 by waterskier Rob Shirley, who built his first hull in a two-stall horse barn in Maryville, Tennessee. The company is now headquartered in Vonore, Tennessee, where it hand-builds thousands of boats per year at a single facility on Tellico Lake.

The core range targets the watersports performance market - tournament ski, wakeboard, and wakesurf - with fifteen production models spanning the NXT, XT, X, XStar, and ProStar families. The flagship X26 (7.92m, seating for 18, CE Class C coastal certification) and the XStar 25 (7.8m, 630 hp Ilmor supercharged 6.2L engine, 18 seats) sit at the top of the range and are the models we discuss with superyacht programmes. Both carry the deep-V hull, ballast-management systems, and high-gloss gelcoat finish that translate directly to the tender role.

MasterCraft entered the superyacht tender segment formally in 2013, when MasterCraft Boats UK was appointed the brand's worldwide superyacht tender dealer. That programme covers specification advice, certified lifting solutions, logistics, and crew training - which matters when a 26-foot inboard towboat needs to live on a davit. The build quality is consistent: fiberglass laminate construction, Ilmor marine engines built on proven V8 blocks, and a five-year bow-to-stern warranty standard across the range. We'd put the X and XStar families alongside the known European tender suppliers for fit-and-finish; the differentiation is the depth of the watersports capability behind the boat, which few purpose-built tenders can match at this size.
