About this tender

MasterCraft Prostar - what we know.

The MasterCraft ProStar is the build we go to when a programme calls for a single-purpose ski boat with tournament pedigree and nothing extraneous designed in. At 6.10m on the waterline with a 2.44m beam, this is a 20-foot direct-drive inboard that has been refined across several generations to do one job - pull a skier through a slalom course with the flattest, most consistent wake available from any production boat. Seven passengers, a fiberglass-composite hull, and an Ilmor V8 driveline sit at the core of the package.

The hull design is the reason the ProStar holds its position in the market. MasterCraft's in-house naval architects have developed a modified-V, partial-step running surface with four tracking fins and proprietary hull rails that deliver what the manufacturer describes as the flattest wakes at any speed and any line length, with minimal spray. That is a claim that tournament results across multiple decades support. The 2020 model year brought a 6.0L MPI Ilmor engine rated at 380 hp as standard, with the 6.2L GDI available as an upgrade at 440 hp or beyond.

On deck, the ProStar's layout is built around the skier and the judge: a floor-mounted ski pylon sits directly ahead of the centre motorbox, gunnel-integrated ski racks clear the cockpit of clutter, and the helm runs a 10-inch touchscreen with Zero Off GPS speed control accurate to a tenth of a mile per hour. The convertible bow - a removable fiberglass lid that converts the open bow to a closed deck - is a feature no other production ski boat currently offers. Modular stern seating folds or removes to keep the aft platform clear when the programme calls for it.

We would put the ProStar alongside the Nautique Ski 200 for any client whose primary requirement is slalom and three-event competition. The MasterCraft build quality holds up - fiberglass-composite construction, CoolFeel vinyl throughout, and Ilmor powertrain warranty coverage of seven years or 1,000 hours on standard engine configurations. For a vessel that will see serious use behind a superyacht or at a private lake facility, that warranty position is meaningful. The 98-litre tank on the 2020 UK-specification model is modest by design; the ProStar is propped and tuned for the 34-36 mph operating band, not open-water range.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Four-fin direct-drive hull

The ProStar runs a modified-V partial-step hull with four tracking fins and proprietary hull rails developed by MasterCraft's in-house naval architects. The combination delivers the flattest wakes at competition line lengths and speeds, with minimal spray - a platform on which tournament world records have been set across multiple disciplines.

02

Convertible open and closed bow

A removable fiberglass bow lid converts the ProStar from an open-bow configuration with seating for two or three to a fully closed deck. MasterCraft is the only production ski boat manufacturer currently offering this feature, giving the owner two distinct boat layouts without additional canvas or structural compromise.

03

Ilmor V8 with class-leading warranty

Standard power on the 2020 ProStar is the Ilmor 6.0L MPI V8 at 380 hp, with the 6.2L GDI at 440 hp available as a factory option. Ilmor backs standard engine configurations with a seven-year, 1,000-hour warranty - the longest powertrain warranty in the inboard towboat segment.

04

Zero Off GPS speed control

Zero Off is fitted as standard equipment on every ProStar, delivering GPS-based speed control accurate to one-tenth of a mile per hour. The 10-inch touchscreen helm integrates three-event competition software for slalom, tricks, and jump, with stereo and boat management controls consolidated into a single display.

05

Weight-managed platform

A 98-litre fuel tank on UK-specification 2020 models, along with a dry weight of approximately 1,497 kg, reflects MasterCraft's deliberate design strategy: keep unsprung mass low to maintain flat wakes and predictable pulls across the full range of skier weights and rope lengths.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

What engine does the MasterCraft ProStar come with?
The 2020 model year ProStar came standard with an Ilmor 6.0L MPI V8 producing 380 hp. The 6.2L GDI V8 at 440 hp is available as a factory upgrade. Both share Ilmor's exclusive partnership with MasterCraft and carry a seven-year, 1,000-hour warranty on standard configurations. The 6.2L is generally preferred by tournament skiers for its pull characteristics with Zero Off engaged.
Is the MasterCraft ProStar suitable for all skill levels, or only competitive skiers?
The ProStar is designed for the full range, from a first-time learner to a world-record holder. The Zero Off speed control, predictable direct-drive pull, and flat wake at any line length mean novices get a consistent, manageable pull. Removable stern seats and bow seating give the layout flexibility for family use alongside serious slalom sessions.
What is the difference between the open-bow and closed-bow configurations?
The ProStar ships with a removable fiberglass lid that seals off the bow section. With the lid in place, the boat presents as a closed-deck ski boat. Remove it and you have bow seating for two or three persons. MasterCraft is the only production manufacturer offering this convertible feature as a factory fitment rather than a canvas solution.
How does the four-fin hull system work?
Four tracking fins mounted on the running surface work in combination with proprietary hull rails along the hull sides. The system improves centerline tracking and steering precision without requiring driver correction through a slalom course. The tunable rudder introduced in the 2021 redesign adds further adjustability. The net result is described by MasterCraft as the easiest-driving ProStar ever produced.
What is the fuel capacity and how does that affect wake performance?
The 2020 UK-specification ProStar carries 98 litres; current US-market models carry 113 litres. The relatively modest tank is deliberate: lower fuel mass keeps overall displacement down and maintains flatter, more consistent wakes. The ProStar is propped for a 34-36 mph operating band, not extended range cruising, so tank size is less of a constraint in practice.
Can the ProStar be used behind a superyacht or at a private lake facility?
Yes, and we have seen it specified in both roles. As a superyacht ski tender the ProStar's 6.10m length makes garage stowage feasible on larger chase platforms, though a dedicated chase vessel is needed given the direct-drive layout and low freeboard. At a private lake facility it is the benchmark choice for owners who want tournament-grade pulls for family and guests.

MasterCraft

Vonore, Tennessee, USA

MasterCraft is an American performance boat manufacturer founded in 1968 by waterskier Rob Shirley, who built his first hull in a two-stall horse barn in Maryville, Tennessee. The company is now headquartered in Vonore, Tennessee, where it hand-builds thousands of boats per year at a single facility on Tellico Lake.

The core range targets the watersports performance market - tournament ski, wakeboard, and wakesurf - with fifteen production models spanning the NXT, XT, X, XStar, and ProStar families. The flagship X26 (7.92m, seating for 18, CE Class C coastal certification) and the XStar 25 (7.8m, 630 hp Ilmor supercharged 6.2L engine, 18 seats) sit at the top of the range and are the models we discuss with superyacht programmes. Both carry the deep-V hull, ballast-management systems, and high-gloss gelcoat finish that translate directly to the tender role.

MasterCraft entered the superyacht tender segment formally in 2013, when MasterCraft Boats UK was appointed the brand's worldwide superyacht tender dealer. That programme covers specification advice, certified lifting solutions, logistics, and crew training - which matters when a 26-foot inboard towboat needs to live on a davit. The build quality is consistent: fiberglass laminate construction, Ilmor marine engines built on proven V8 blocks, and a five-year bow-to-stern warranty standard across the range. We'd put the X and XStar families alongside the known European tender suppliers for fit-and-finish; the differentiation is the depth of the watersports capability behind the boat, which few purpose-built tenders can match at this size.
