About this tender

Novamarine BS160 Outboard - what we know.

The BS 160 is the build we ask Novamarine for when a programme needs genuine size, serious speed, and the flexibility to go shallow. At 16.7m in outboard configuration, with twenty-five persons certified and a total engine output of 1,800 hp, this is not a crossover play - it is a purpose-built vessel from the Black Shiver line, designed to cover ground and host guests in equal measure. The 0.8m draft means it operates in coastal shallows that would exclude heavier platforms, and the available in-outboard variant stretches the hull to 17.0m with 1,320 hp for those who prioritise stern-access volume over peak velocity.

On deck the layout is structured around a covered dinette amidships, a galley cabinet with fridge, sink, and storage, and a bow area that converts between sofa, sundeck, and dining configurations. Below decks a convertible dinette-to-berth and a separate shower bathroom with air conditioning make extended passages practical rather than aspirational. Side doors and stern access points sit close to the waterline, which is the detail captains actually notice when water-toy operations are running at anchor. The dominant steering console carries navigation and handling loads in all conditions, and Novamarine's quoted max speed of 50 knots in the outboard version gives it genuine transfer capability between anchorages.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Two propulsion configurations

The BS 160 is offered in outboard and in-outboard variants. The outboard version measures 16.7m and produces 1,800 hp for a quoted maximum of 50 knots. The in-outboard extends the hull to 17.0m, reduces total power to 1,320 hp, and trades peak speed for a larger, uncluttered stern platform - a meaningful difference if your programme runs a tender or water-sport operation from the aft deck.

02

0.8m draft across both variants

A draft of 0.8m is consistent across both the outboard and in-outboard configurations. At a 16-to-17-metre length, that figure is notably low and opens up anchorage options that exclude heavier monohull chase boats. Shallow bays, river mouths, and reef passages become accessible without a change of vessel.

03

Twenty-five person capacity

Both BS 160 variants are rated for twenty-five persons - a headcount more commonly associated with commercial-code platforms than a private yacht tender. Combined with a covered deck dinette, convertible bow area, and below-decks accommodation, the boat supports a full owner party without compromising the operational brief.

04

Below-decks cabin with air conditioning

A below-decks saloon converts from dinette to double berth; a separate shower bathroom with air conditioning is fitted as standard. At 16.7 to 17.0 metres the boat carries enough volume below the waterline to make crew rest and owner privacy functional, rather than token.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

What is the difference between the BS 160 outboard and in-outboard variants?
The outboard variant is 16.7m, produces 1,800 hp, and reaches a quoted maximum of 50 knots. The in-outboard is 17.0m, 1,320 hp, and tops out at 42 knots. Both share an identical 4.36m beam and 0.8m draft. The in-outboard's stern arrangement offers a larger, more accessible aft platform; the outboard version prioritises peak speed performance.
How many people can the BS 160 carry?
Both the outboard and in-outboard configurations are rated for twenty-five persons according to Novamarine's published specification. This applies across both variants without distinction.
Is the BS 160 suitable for shallow anchorages?
With a 0.8m draft consistent across both variants, the BS 160 is well suited to shallow coastal waters, bays, and river approaches. Novamarine specifically notes that the low draft allows exploration closer to shore in their published description of the model.
Does the BS 160 have overnight accommodation?
Yes. Below decks there is a dinette that converts to a berth and a bathroom with separate shower and air conditioning. This is not a full cabin cruiser fitout, but it supports crew rest and short overnight stays comfortably for a vessel of this category.
What is the quoted cruising speed for the BS 160?
35 knots in the outboard configuration and 32 knots in the in-outboard configuration, per Novamarine's published technical specifications on the model page.

The yard

Novamarine

Olbia, Italy

Novamarine is a Sardinian RIB and luxury tender builder, operational from Olbia on Italy's northeastern coast. The current company in its present corporate form dates to 2008, growing out of the SNO shipyard group led by brothers Andrea and Francesco Pirro; the broader brand lineage traces back to production in Olbia from the early 1980s. The yard builds at the SNO site in Olbia, with direct sea access, and targets the superyacht support, professional, and military markets across a range of four active lines: the flagship Black Shiver (BS) series, the HD line, the RH line, and a smaller Tender series - covering hulls from roughly 4.0m out to 24.0m.

In the superyacht context, the build we ask Novamarine for is a Black Shiver: a high-capacity RIB whose foam-filled, closed-cell tubes are engineered to be puncture-resistant and non-deflating, giving meaningful safety and stability margins over a conventional air-tube collar. Hull construction runs fiberglass with vinylester resin and Kevlar reinforcement. The BS 100 (9.98m) carries up to twenty guests at up to 47 knots; the BS 120 (12.0m) is the most requested hull for professional and military programmes; the BS 160 (17.0m) steps up to a full cabin format with multi-engine outboard or sterndrive options. The BS 220 sits at the top of the range as a self-sufficient passage-capable tender. Forty-three percent of Novamarine sales go to foreign customers, and the vessels are in service with coast guard and rescue agencies alongside private superyacht programmes - a build quality signal captains and project managers read clearly.
