About this tender

Whitmarsh 8.6m - what we know.

The Whitmarsh 8.6m is the British yard's mid-size bespoke tender, sized for parent yachts where the 6.2m platform is too small but a Limo build at twelve metres is more than the brief requires. At 8.6m on a 3.0m beam she carries up to twelve guests with a 200L diesel tank, with the lamination quality and bespoke detailing that define the Whitmarsh range across the rest of the platform list.

We point owners at the 8.6m when the brief is a credible chase-adjacent tender that can also serve as a beach-lander or as a guest-shuttle in moderate weather. The deep-V stepped hull form delivers offshore performance and sea-keeping behaviour that the smaller 6.2m platform cannot match; the longer waterline supports useful range and a more comfortable ride at chase speeds.

Build philosophy is unchanged across the Whitmarsh range: hand-laid GRP with E-glass CSM and bi-axial cloth, reinforced with high-density Divinycell foam sandwich, all built at Northshore Shipyard in Chichester Harbour. Detailing is bespoke per commission and matched to the parent yacht. After-sales service is the long-term differentiator that brings British owners back to the yard on subsequent builds.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Deep-V stepped hull

Deep-V stepped hull form for offshore performance, sea-keeping and stability. The step geometry trims wetted area at chase speeds without compromising the hull's behaviour at displacement speeds, which matters on a tender that may operate at both extremes within a single working day. The 3.0m beam supports working deck space without losing hull efficiency.

02

Beach-lander variant

Available in beach-lander spec for parent yachts whose use case includes routine beach landings: shallower deadrise forward, reinforced bow and forefoot, shallow-water propeller protection. The variant is built on the same hull mould with detail changes; we recommend the spec for any Caribbean-based parent or any owner whose itinerary includes Greek beach destinations regularly.

03

Twelve-guest capacity

Coastal day capacity is twelve guests with crew. The configuration supports parent-yacht-to-shore transfer on most charter itineraries; for larger guest groups owners typically run two trips rather than upsizing the tender. The deck plan is detailed per commission: console placement, seating layout and stowage are matched to the parent yacht's operational profile.

04

Bespoke detailing

Each commission is detailed bespoke at the yard. Upholstery materials, hardware finishes, paint match, console layout and stowage layout are tailored to the parent yacht. Whitmarsh maintain tooling for the platform but treat every hull as a one-off interior fit; the result is a tender that genuinely reads as part of the parent yacht's design language rather than a generic appliance.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

8.6m or 6.2m for a typical parent yacht?
8.6m for parent yachts above 50 metres with the davit capacity to lift and stow a 12-passenger tender. 6.2m for smaller parents or where the secondary tender role is the brief. The 8.6m is more comfortable in chop, faster in transit, and carries more guests cleanly; the 6.2m fits more davits and tender bays. Confirm davit working load before specifying.
Beach-lander or standard tender?
Beach-lander for parent yachts whose use case includes routine beach landings. Standard tender for everywhere else. The beach-lander variant is incrementally more expensive but the variant changes are real: hull reinforcement, propeller protection, shallower deadrise. For Caribbean and Greek itineraries we recommend the beach-lander spec; for Med marina-based use the standard hull is correct.
Will it match the parent yacht aesthetic?
Yes, fully. Whitmarsh detail every build to match the parent: paint colour, upholstery materials, hardware finishes, console layout. Owners and captains routinely request specific paint matches and bespoke trim; the yard handles this as standard. We have specified hulls with very precise colour matches and the result reads as designed-as-a-set rather than retrofitted.
Realistic ownership cost over five years?
Plan for annual yard refresh costs of around five percent of new-build value: detailing, antifoul, engine service and any minor cosmetic refresh. Whitmarsh's after-sales support is the value here: the yard handle this work in-house at consistent quality. Year-on-year resale value holds well versus mass-produced equivalents because the yard maintains the boat to the original spec.

The yard

Whitmarsh

Chichester, UK

Whitmarsh High Performance Ribs is a British builder operating from waterside premises at Northshore Shipyard, Chichester Harbour, on the south coast of England. The yard is a deliberately low-volume operation - founder James Whitmarsh brings over 35 years of experience in performance boat construction, offshore powerboat racing, and superyacht new-build and warranty work, and that background shapes every hull the company produces.

The range runs from 6.25m to 11.5m and divides into three clear families: the ST superyacht tender series (ST65, ST73, ST105, ST115, ST625, ST725, ST925), the SL SOLAS rescue and safety line, and the RS sport series (RS7, RS11), plus the custom C115 limousine build. The ST115 is the current flagship - an 11.5m platform rated to 1,200 hp drawing on a proven open-ocean racing hull, capable of over 60 knots. Hull and deck laminates are engineered using GRP and Divinycell foam core, optimised for the minimum weight-to-strength ratio; inboard and outboard configurations are both offered across the tender series.

What brings programmes back to Whitmarsh is the build philosophy: every boat is individually specified to complement the mothership, with bespoke finishes, upholstery detail, and a deep-V stepped hull design developed for genuine offshore sea-keeping. The yard also covers full custom projects and tender refit. We work with Whitmarsh on beach landers, SOLAS tenders, and guest RIBs; the price point holds up well against European volume builders at a meaningfully smaller production run.
