About this tender

Reliant Yachts Lander - what we know.

The X40L Lander is the utility boat in the Reliant Yachts X40 trio. The brief was a 40-foot tender that has to be practical first, always ready to load and deliver bulky stores and equipment, but with the proportion and finish to behave as a luxury SUV in the afternoon. MacFarlane and Ewing drew the lines; Reliant built it.

The Lander shares the X40 design language with its two sisters, the Express chase tender and the Limousine ship-to-shore. Same hull family, same metallic silver paint with black accents, same Rhode Island design hand. What changes is the deck layout and the running gear: the Lander is dimensioned to load gear in the morning and unload guests at the beach in the afternoon, with 750 L of diesel for working range.

At 24,250 lb the Lander is roughly a third heavier than the other X40 boats. That weight buys equipment, fuel, freshwater, ballast, plus black and grey water tankage to operate independently of the mothership. Cruise sits at 11-16 knots in working trim with a 24-knot top end. Not a sport boat by design; a working tender that happens to look like part of a coordinated three-boat programme.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Utility-first design brief

Drawn from the start as a working tender. Stores, equipment, beach gear, water toys, all loaded and unloaded over a deck laid out for the job. Then the same boat invites a crowd aboard for an afternoon at the beach and runs to a secluded inlet for cocktails and al fresco dining. Few utility tenders manage both halves; this one does.

02

Heavier hull, more capability

At 24,250 lb the Lander is around a third heavier than the X40 Express and Limousine. The extra weight buys equipment volume, fuel capacity, freshwater, ballast, plus black and grey water tankage. Result is a tender that operates independently of the mothership for full days, which most utility tenders cannot.

03

Working speed range

Cruises 11-16 knots in working trim, top speed in the 24-knot band. Not a chase tender; a credible utility boat that gets where it needs to be efficiently and stays steady in the working speed range. The 750 L of diesel gives the operating range that justifies the brief.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

Why specify a utility tender at this size?
Above 50m most yachts need a real utility boat for stores, water toys, beach equipment, water sports gear, plus the day-to-day logistics of running a crewed yacht. A small utility RIB cannot do the job; a chase boat is the wrong tool. The X40L sits in the sweet spot: 40 feet, working layout, with the finish to double as a guest boat at anchor.
Is the cruise speed adequate?
Yes, for the brief. Utility tenders are not chase boats; the Lander cruises 11-16 knots in working trim and tops out at 24 knots, which is enough to keep up with most mothership transit speeds and to cover decent ground when running independently. Pushing it harder is not what the boat was designed for.
Does the matched-set premium hold up at resale?
It depends on the buyer. For owners building a new programme who want a coordinated tender fleet at delivery, the matching set is genuinely valuable, the work to coordinate three custom tenders end-to-end is significant. For owners replacing a single tender, the boats trade as individuals and the premium softens. Worth thinking about up front.

The yard

Reliant Yachts

Newport, Rhode Island, USA

Reliant Yachts is a Newport, Rhode Island design-and-build house founded in 2012 by partners Dave MacFarlane and Jim Ewing, with construction carried out at partner yards - the X40 programme was fabricated in Tuzla, Turkey. The firm targets the custom and semi-custom end of the market, from 40-foot harbour cruisers up to blue-water sailing and power yachts of 140 feet and beyond.

The X40 is the build we ask Reliant for when a single superyacht programme calls for a matched trio of tenders with a unified design language. All three hulls share a 12.26m (40.0ft) overall length and the same plumb bow, clean topsides, and metallic-finish paint scheme. The X40 Express is the chase-oriented platform: an epoxy, cold-moulded wood-laminate hull, carbon-fibre deck with classic teak surface, and twin Cummins QSB 6.7 480-hp diesels driving Konrad 660b stern drives - which retract to let the boat slide into a tender garage with a clearance of 2.9m. Sea trials recorded a top speed of 40.7 knots; comfortable cruising sits between 27 and 33 knots. The X40T Limousine shares the hull form, twin Cummins QSB 6.7 425-hp diesels, and the same carbon hardtop and saloon structure, hitting 38 knots in trials. The X40L Lander swaps to an aluminium hull and Hamilton jet drives to handle shore landings, and carries a stone-top dining table for fourteen that rises electrically from under the deck.

What distinguishes the programme is its garage-first engineering discipline: hull height, lifting points, and stern-drive kinematics are resolved at the drawing stage, not retrofitted on the hard. We'd put it alongside bespoke European tender programmes on finish quality, at a measurably lower price point.
