About this tender

Zeelander 5 - what we know.

The Zeelander 5 is the build we ask Zeelander Yachts for when a programme needs a 14.7m sports cruiser that can genuinely double as a passage maker. Built in limited numbers at the yard's facility in the Netherlands, it evolves the award-winning Z44 with sharper performance, refined acoustics, and a cabin specification that holds its own against much larger vessels. The headline figures are direct: 40 knots top speed, a declared sound level below 72 dBA depending on engine choice, and a 455 nm range that covers meaningful coastal distances without a fuel stop.

The engine fit is twin Volvo Penta D6-IPS 650 as standard, with a triple-650 IPS configuration available for owners who want the extra reserve. Both options route drive through Volvo's pod system, which contributes to the low noise signature and the clean, uncluttered deck aft. Four berths, a master cabin with vanity desk, and a separate guest cabin mean the Zeelander 5 is a liveaboard proposition for two couples, not simply a day boat with a bunk. The 360-degree wheelhouse view, sliding sunroof, and integrated galley complete a layout that Zeelander describes as a superyacht at sports-cruiser scale - and the specification supports that claim.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

IPS driveline, twin or triple

Volvo Penta D6-IPS 650 is fitted as standard in twin configuration; a triple-IPS 650 option is available. The pod drive arrangement eliminates shaft tunnels from the interior, reduces underwater noise, and is the primary reason the Zeelander 5 quotes a sound level below 72 dBA depending on engine specification.

02

455 nm declared range

A 455 nm range puts meaningful coastal and inter-island passages within reach on a single fuel load. That figure, combined with four permanent berths, means the Zeelander 5 functions as a standalone passage-making vessel rather than a day boat with overnight capability bolted on.

03

Four-berth cabin arrangement

The interior carries four berths across a master cabin and a dedicated guest cabin, each finished to the yard's superyacht reference standard. A vanity desk in the master cabin and a full galley indicate that Zeelander has engineered for extended use rather than occasional overnight stays.

04

Limited-production Dutch build

Production is intentionally restricted at the Zeelander facility in the Netherlands. That constraint is a deliberate quality-control measure: each hull receives individual attention at every stage, and the metallic paint, stainless steel detailing, and interior fit-out reflect that approach rather than volume production economics.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

What engine options are available on the Zeelander 5?
Zeelander quotes twin Volvo Penta D6-IPS 650 as the standard fit and offers a triple D6-IPS 650 configuration for owners wanting additional power reserve. Both routes use Volvo's pod drive system, which contributes directly to the hull's low acoustic signature and clean aft-deck layout.
What is the top speed and range of the Zeelander 5?
The manufacturer quotes 40 knots top speed and a 455 nm range. The acoustic claim is below 72 dBA, which varies with engine configuration. These figures come from Zeelander's own model page and should be treated as manufacturer-stated rather than independently verified test results.
How many people can sleep aboard the Zeelander 5?
The Zeelander 5 carries four berths in two cabins: a master cabin with vanity desk and a separate guest cabin. The layout also includes a full galley and a wheelhouse salon, making it a credible liveaboard platform for two couples on extended coastal passages.
Where is the Zeelander 5 built?
All Zeelander models, including the 5, are produced at the yard's facility in the Netherlands. Production is intentionally limited on a yearly basis, which the yard positions as a quality-control measure rather than a commercial constraint.
Is the Zeelander 5 suitable as a superyacht tender or chase boat?
At 14.7m, the Zeelander 5 sits at the upper end of the tender category and is more naturally positioned as a standalone sports cruiser or chase boat for a large mothership programme. Its four-berth cabin, 455 nm range, and IPS driveline make it better suited to an independent passage-making role than to a garage-stowed tender duty.

The yard

Zeelander

Groot-Ammers, Netherlands

Zeelander Yachts is a Dutch boutique shipyard founded in 2002 by Sietse Koopmans and based in Groot-Ammers, South Holland. The yard builds entirely to order from its facility on the banks of the Lek River, with limited annual production across a current range of four models: the Zeelander 5 (14.7m), Zeelander 6 (17.0m), Zeelander 7 (20.3m), and the flagship Zeelander 8 (23.9m). Heritage models - the Z44, which debuted at the 2008 Monaco Yacht Show, followed by the Z55 in 2015 and the Z72 in 2019 - established the yard's reputation before the current naming convention was adopted.

Zeelander's market position sits at the intersection of the semi-custom sports cruiser and the superyacht-adjacent chase boat. The Zeelander 8 in particular is noted in the industry as a capable superyacht tender and chase platform. The hull form is a GRP composite, vacuum-infused with vinyl ester resin, built to deep-V and modified-V sections engineered for low noise and vibration. Exterior styling - all curved surfaces, no straight lines - was developed with designer Cor D. Rover and draws its proportional language from European sports cars of the post-war era.

We'd put Zeelander alongside the smaller Italian sports-cruiser builders for finish quality, with a Dutch build discipline and a noise-at-cruise figure that consistently sits below the competition. Each hull involves over 250 people spanning 28 disciplines, and build hours per vessel are reported by the yard at between 16,000 and 25,000. If your programme calls for a chase boat that works as a stand-alone vessel for the owner's family rather than a pure utility run-about, the Zeelander range is the first conversation to have.
