About this tender

Zeelander 8 - what we know.

The Zeelander 8 is the largest model in Zeelander's four-boat range and the one we point owners to when the programme calls for genuine overnight capability alongside credible passage speeds. At 23.9 metres, it sits in a bracket that most yards would classify as a small superyacht; Zeelander build it as a sports cruiser with superyacht detailing, and that tension is precisely what makes the hull interesting.

The driveline is quad Volvo Penta D13-IPS in either 1,200 or 1,350 hp per unit, giving the hull a quoted top speed of 40 knots and a noise floor below 65 dBA - a figure that matters on passage when the interior is occupied overnight. Nine berths and a 510 nm range give the vessel genuine cruising autonomy; a 6.6m beam at 23.9m LOA keeps the proportions tight rather than barge-like.

Production is deliberately limited out of Zeelander's facility in the Netherlands. That constraint is intentional: it allows the yard to maintain finish quality and manage the owner relationship closely. We'd put the Zeelander 8 alongside Italian sports-cruiser builders for aesthetic ambition, but the Dutch build philosophy and IPS drivetrain make the day-to-day ownership picture rather more straightforward.

Highlights

Built for the work.

The four details we'd point out first to a captain who hasn't seen one on the water yet.

01

Quad IPS driveline, two power options

Zeelander specify quad Volvo Penta D13-IPS units in either 1,200 or 1,350 hp per engine. IPS pod drives deliver lower fuel consumption, reduced vibration, and superior manoeuvrability compared with conventional shaft arrangements - relevant when your programme includes crowded marina approaches and overnight passages in the same week.

02

510 nm range at cruise

A quoted range of 510 nm puts the Balearics-to-Sardinia leg, or a full Atlantic coast passage, within reach on a single fuel stop. At 23.9 metres with nine berths aboard, that is a meaningful operational figure rather than a marketing one.

03

Sub-65 dBA sound level

Zeelander quote a noise figure of less than 65 dBA, dependent on engine choice. For a vessel carrying nine berths and running overnight passages, an interior sound level in that bracket is the difference between a rested crew and a fatigued one. The IPS drivetrain and hull form both contribute.

04

Nine berths in 23.9 metres

Four general arrangement drawings are published, showing what appears to be a multi-cabin layout across a 23.9m hull with 6.6m beam. Nine berths in this length is a practical outcome of the beam-to-length ratio and the Dutch approach to volume efficiency.

05

Limited production, Netherlands build

The Zeelander 8 is built in limited annual quantities at the yard's facility in the Netherlands. Constrained production means each hull receives individual attention, and the yard's direct sales model gives buyers a short chain between specification decisions and build outcomes.

Questions, answered

Before you enquire.

What engine options are available on the Zeelander 8?
Zeelander specify quad Volvo Penta D13-IPS units with a choice of 1,200 hp or 1,350 hp per engine. The higher-output option is likely the one to specify if your programme runs regular long passages or if you want headroom above the quoted 40-knot top speed figure.
How many people can sleep aboard the Zeelander 8?
Zeelander list nine berths for the Zeelander 8. Four general arrangement layouts are published on the manufacturer's website, suggesting some flexibility in how that accommodation is distributed across the 23.9m hull.
What is the range of the Zeelander 8?
The manufacturer quotes 510 nm. At 23.9 metres with quad IPS drives, that figure covers most Mediterranean coastal passages without a fuel stop, and supports longer offshore legs when combined with careful passage planning.
Where is the Zeelander 8 built?
The Zeelander 8 is built in the Netherlands in limited annual quantities. The yard operates a direct sales model, which means buyers deal with the build team rather than through a dealer network - relevant if you are specifying a hull to a particular programme.
How loud is the Zeelander 8 underway?
Zeelander quote a sound level below 65 dBA, noting that the exact figure depends on engine choice. That is a low number for a 40-knot hull and reflects both the IPS drivetrain and the acoustic engineering in the hull structure.

The yard

Zeelander

Groot-Ammers, Netherlands

Zeelander Yachts is a Dutch boutique shipyard founded in 2002 by Sietse Koopmans and based in Groot-Ammers, South Holland. The yard builds entirely to order from its facility on the banks of the Lek River, with limited annual production across a current range of four models: the Zeelander 5 (14.7m), Zeelander 6 (17.0m), Zeelander 7 (20.3m), and the flagship Zeelander 8 (23.9m). Heritage models - the Z44, which debuted at the 2008 Monaco Yacht Show, followed by the Z55 in 2015 and the Z72 in 2019 - established the yard's reputation before the current naming convention was adopted.

Zeelander's market position sits at the intersection of the semi-custom sports cruiser and the superyacht-adjacent chase boat. The Zeelander 8 in particular is noted in the industry as a capable superyacht tender and chase platform. The hull form is a GRP composite, vacuum-infused with vinyl ester resin, built to deep-V and modified-V sections engineered for low noise and vibration. Exterior styling - all curved surfaces, no straight lines - was developed with designer Cor D. Rover and draws its proportional language from European sports cars of the post-war era.

We'd put Zeelander alongside the smaller Italian sports-cruiser builders for finish quality, with a Dutch build discipline and a noise-at-cruise figure that consistently sits below the competition. Each hull involves over 250 people spanning 28 disciplines, and build hours per vessel are reported by the yard at between 16,000 and 25,000. If your programme calls for a chase boat that works as a stand-alone vessel for the owner's family rather than a pure utility run-about, the Zeelander range is the first conversation to have.
