About ribs

RIBs remain the practical backbone of many yacht programmes. Tube material, hull shape, lifting geometry, and engine access decide whether a boat works as a tender rather than simply as a fast day boat. Compare new and pre-owned RIBs here.

What is a RIB tender?
A RIB (rigid inflatable boat) pairs a rigid hull with inflatable collar tubes. It is the workhorse format of the superyacht-tender world: forgiving alongside the swim platform, more stable at rest than a hard-bottom hull, and it carries more passengers per metre of length because the collar adds beam and freeboard without adding hull volume.
Hypalon or PVC tubes, which is better for a yacht tender?
For a yacht-tender brief Hypalon, or modern CSM equivalents, is the default: UV- and chemical-resistant, lasting 10 to 15 years in Mediterranean use. PVC is cheaper but degrades faster (5 to 8 years) and is only appropriate as a budget tender for a garaged, limited-use boat.
How does a RIB compare to a limousine tender?
A limousine has the presence and weather protection a RIB lacks; a RIB carries more guests, costs less and handles routine yacht-side knocks better. Most superyacht programmes carry both, a limousine for the formal arrival, a RIB for the working week.
What size RIB tenders are used on superyachts?
Crew RIBs 4 to 6m; guest RIBs 6 to 9m, the volume sweet spot and often jet-driven for swim-platform safety; sport or chase RIBs 9 to 14m; plus SOLAS-coded RIBs for rescue duty, self-righting and with sealed compartments.
Why are superyacht RIBs often jet-driven?
Jet drive is increasingly specified on guest RIBs because there is no exposed propeller at the swim platform. Outboards remain the most common drivetrain overall, especially on crew and chase RIBs; sterndrive is older spec and less common now.
